Katherine Legge's attempt at the Memorial Day Double ended after 19 laps at Indianapolis Motor Speedway when contact with Ryan Hunter-Reay's spinning car brought out the first caution of the 2026 Indianapolis 500. The 45-year-old British driver, competing for HMD Motorsports in alliance with A.J. Foyt Racing, was able to exit her No. 11 Chevrolet without assistance and was later released from the medical center. Her early retirement leaves Tony Stewart as the only driver to have completed both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

Legge qualified 26th for the 500 and started the race on time despite earlier rain concerns. The average running time of the Indianapolis 500 is approximately three hours. She planned to travel afterward to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. ET, where she will drive the No. 78 Chevrolet for Live Fast Motorsports.

Five drivers have previously attempted the Memorial Day Double. Stewart remains the sole driver to finish the full 1,100 miles in one day. Kyle Larson made attempts in both 2024 and 2025 but did not complete both races.

Legge will now focus on the Coca-Cola 600 after being released from medical evaluation. She described the incident as outside her control and noted the need to shift attention to the NASCAR event.
