Brady Ranks Chiefs No. 7, Says Mahomes Looks Like Himself
Tom Brady is not writing off the Kansas City Chiefs as Super Bowl contenders. In his latest NFL power rankings, the three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback slotted Kansas City at No. 7 and said Patrick Mahomes is showing signs of returning to his customary form after tearing his ACL last December.
"I think, in a lot of ways, he's back to being Patrick Mahomes," Brady said. "What do I mean by that? His leadership, discipline, tenacity - all of those things were on display. Mahomes' numbers were modest in the Chiefs' 31-10 win over the Denver Broncos on Monday night: 15 of 27 passing for 184 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also scored on a 15-yard run in the first quarter, a play Brady pointed to as evidence of the quarterback's health. "Patrick Mahomes, are you kidding me? He might be able to contribute something to this offense as well," Brady said. "He wasn't avoiding any contact on Monday night; I'm sure of that."
The bigger statistical story belonged to newcomer Kenneth Walker III, who rushed for a career-high 173 yards on 7.5 yards per carry, including a 60-yard touchdown that put the game away in the second half. Walker drew praise from Brady as well, though most of his commentary centered on Mahomes - whose career recovery from a torn ACL invites comparison to Brady's own return from the same injury earlier in his career.
Brady dismissed any suggestion that Kansas City's championship window is closing. "Why are we counting them out? Never count them out," he said, adding that the combination of a proven coaching staff, an elite quarterback and an organization built on championship standards remains a formula worth respecting. "I always felt like when you've got a great coach and you've got a great QB, and that organization has championship standards … watch out, man," Brady said.
