Alabama youth baseball player shares name, position and handedness with former Phillies star Chase Utley

A youth baseball player from Mobile, Alabama, named Chase Utley plays second base, bats left-handed and throws right-handed, matching the profile of the retired Philadelphia Phillies second baseman of the same name.[1][2]

The elder Chase Utley, born December 17, 1978, in Pasadena, California, played 16 Major League Baseball seasons from 2003 to 2018, primarily at second base for the Phillies (2003-2015) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2015-2018). He batted left-handed and threw right-handed, compiling a .263 career batting average with 259 home runs over 1,892 games. Utley helped the Phillies win the 2008 World Series, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in five games.[3][4] He was inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame on August 13, 2024, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.[5]

The younger Chase Utley was born in August 2009, approximately 10 months after the Phillies' 2008 World Series victory. His parents, Brian and Amanda Utley, settled on the name despite initial hesitation over the coincidence. Brian, a Kansas City Royals fan, was aware of the Phillies player, while Amanda liked the name independently before learning of the MLB star. The family supports the Royals as their top team but roots for the Phillies as a secondary favorite.[1]

The younger Utley, a high school prospect listed on Perfect Game as a right-handed pitcher and shortstop who also plays second base, credits his father for developing his skills as a left-handed hitter and middle infielder. Perfect Game scouting vice president Jered Goodwin described him as athletic and versatile with Division I college potential.[1][6]

At tournaments in Mobile, Alabama, including events in February 2024, the younger Utley's name draws attention, with umpires and fans sometimes mistaking his father for the former MLB player. Opponents frequently ask if he is related to or named after the Phillies legend.[1]

The elder Utley, who has encountered children and pets named after him but no exact namesake, called the situation "extremely unique." The families plan an initial virtual introduction followed by an in-person meeting in the coming months to discuss baseball.[1]
