World Series-winning manager gets emotional after learning on live TV his team will retire his number

White Sox to retire Ozzie Guillén's No. 13 in live TV reveal

Scott Podsednik surprised former Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillén on a live CHSN broadcast during Friday's home opener at Guaranteed Rate Field by announcing the retirement of his No. 13 uniform. The reveal came before the bottom of the third inning, with host Chuck Garfien and Guillén alongside Podsednik. Guillén wiped away tears after Podsednik read from an envelope detailing a special ceremony set for Saturday, August 8.

Podsednik stated the White Sox will honor Guillén, the 2005 World Series-winning manager, as the 13th player in franchise history to have his number retired and the first manager. Fans chanted Guillén's name over the stadium public address system as he shared a hug with Podsednik. Guillén joked, "Another bobblehead?" before reacting, "Oh my God, where's my wife?" and adding, "Wow. I don’t know how to react, how to say thank you to the White Sox organization. Wow."

Guillén played shortstop for 13 seasons with the White Sox and led the team to its first World Series title in 88 years by defeating the Houston Astros in 2005. He has served as a team analyst since 2019.

The ceremony will mark Guillén's lasting legacy with the franchise amid the team's recent struggles.
